White Cane Day : Oral Screening Event at with Lion’s Club MAHSA Nexus

The Dental Public Health Department of the Faculty of Dentistry has organized several outreach programs each year for the undergraduates and postgraduates as part of their curriculum. Oral health is equally important as overall health.

Oral diseases, such as untreated caries, severe periodontitis, and severe tooth loss, were listed among the top 100 Global Burden Diseases in 2010. The clinical aspects of oral health have been thoroughly investigated in epidemiological surveys. However, less is known about the impacts of oral health on quality of life. Recent results reveal that poor oral health may limit daily activities and loss of work due to oral disease has been documented.

Lion’s club first began in 1917. The clubs are places where individuals join together to give their valuable time and effort to improving their communities, and the world. Their mission is to empower Lions clubs, volunteers, and partners to improve health and well-being, strengthen communities, and support those in need through humanitarian services and grants that impact lives globally, and encourage peace and international understanding. Their service is to be the global leader in community and humanitarian service.

Oral health promotion together with non-governmental organization is to make strides in Improving Global Dental Health and community dental health. This collaborative effort together with Lion’s club points out that oral health could be better integrated into general health programmes by tackling common causes and adopting population strategies. Linkages are needed with sectors that influence oral health. We need to work with groups and institutions to contribute to the overall development of the communities.

The White Cane Day (Region 4 Zone 10 Project) was held on the 9th of October at MAHSA Health Nexus in MAHSA Avenue. A total of 27 participants were attended to. This outreach programme will help participant to detect tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems early, when they are easier to treat. Oral Health promotion activities will be carried out to help educate employees on the best ways to care for their teeth and gums.
