Role of Isokinetic Exerciser in Physiotherapy

Isokinetic training allows for maximal muscle contraction over the whole range of joint motion. An isokinetic machine is a rehabilitation exercise tool designed for medical applications, such as measuring, evaluating, and improving muscular strength and joint range of motion. When external pressures are applied to the limb during isokinetic workouts, the muscles can be contracted concentrically (shortening) or eccentrically (lengthening). Large muscle loads and, subsequently, high skeletal loads can be applied during these various types of dynamic resistance training.

With isokinetic exercise equipment, the patient accelerates a lever arm to a preset maximal velocity, goes through a range of motion, and then decelerates at the end of the range to reach the terminal position. Since the speed doesn't change, just the muscular power input does, so does the resistance. A proportionate amount of resistance is applied in response to the athlete's own muscular resistance applied across a range of motion.

At the School of Physiotherapy MAHSA University we have a comprehensive isokinetic lab to facilitate a better learning experience among the students and also provide hands-on clinical experience. It is a full-fledged lab in itself, which is being used to measure muscular strength in musculoskeletal rehabilitation which aims to restores the optimal form of function after injury, stroke, obesity, osteoarthritis or surgery. The final stage of rehabilitation aims to return an individual to normal activities via resistance exercises that are usually focused on regaining muscle strength. The extensive, in-depth analysis helps the students to understand the biomechanics of normal and abnormal movements and also plan the treatment strategies according to the interpretation of the results.

Most isokinetic exercise machines are equipped with these components:

Computer System/Clinical Data System

Dynamometer

Attachments to parts of body, such as attachment for ankle, knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip and/or upper body extremity table

A person will never encounter more resistance than he can bear when using an isokinetic workout equipment since the resistance is equivalent to the effort exerted.

The data demonstrated that isokinetic exercise machines are a trustworthy instrument for measuring isokinetic muscle function, capable of objectively assessing muscular strength, and helpful to patients in achieving their goals.
