Burnout Amongst Academicians in Malaysia: What is it and how do we stop it?

Are you sick and tired of your eight-to-five job or is your eight-to-five job making you sick and tired? If you answered yes to either one of those questions, then you are not alone. According to Mohamed et al. (2021), academicians in Malaysia experience greater levels of burnout and psychological distress when compared to non-academicians. This all ultimately leads to a higher psychological distress among them which significantly affect their job satisfaction. Burnout can be defined as the inability to cope with the emotional stress at the workplace. Intention to ‘Whistle Blow’ in Organisations

The term ‘whistle-blower’ comes from a whistle that a referee uses to indicate illegal or foul play (Qusqas & kleiner, 2001). In general, whistle-blowing has been defined as the disclosure by organization members of illegal, immoral or illegitimate practices under the control of their employers, to persons or organizations that may be able to rectify the action (Miceli and Near 1992). This definition acknowledges that whistle-blowing is about organizational wrongdoings that can either be made internally or externally (Miceli, 1984), and its main purpose is to rectify corporate wrongdoings and malpractices effectively (Syahrul Ahmar Ahmad et al, 2012). Whistleblowers play an essential and legitimate role in revealing political and organizational crime around the globe. Clearly, whistleblowers have the potential to be important actors in processes that underlie the corporate governance mosaic. The issues of whistleblowing have widely spread among the corporate misconduct with the dis

Sociolinguistics: Code Switching & Why We Use It

Code switching is known as the practise of alternating more than one language in communication at one time. Code switching occurs among individuals who are bilingual or multilingual and it happens more often during a spoken conversation than in writing (Nordquist, 2019). There are numerous reasons why code switching occurs within the bilingual and multilingual communities which are not merely an account of casualty but also due to other unconscious factors that must be applied to make it understandable. At times, this can also happen by accident or on purpose. In this article, there will be four reasons discussed to why code switching might happen. First of all, code switching occurs naturally in a social setting. In Malaysia, the majority of us are bilingual and speak a combination of Malay and English and that has created a new spoken variety known as “Manglish”. When conversing with an individual who speaks both the same language, we subconsciously use “Manglish” to either form a p

Restricted Play in Learning and Young Children’s Social Emotional Behaviour

The movement restrictions on account of the Covid-19 pandemic has forced every sector, including schools to change the way they operate from conventional face-to-face activities to online indoor activities. These have not just limited the activities available to children but have also had an impact on children’s social and emotional stability. During this time, most facilities were closed, including indoor and outdoor playgrounds as well as theme parks. Children were not permitted to play, touch, or be close to one another. At this time, children’s access to play was limited by a lack of access to a suitable environments, and availability of playing materials. As we all know, in the 21st century, learning takes place through critical and creative thinking. Through play, children learn to develop these skills via technology and more creative and interesting materials. The pandemic has limited the exposure of children to using their creativity and critical thinking in play. Children spe

Hands-on training for Medical Imaging Students: Venipuncture and Intravenous Injection

“Much of what students are going to deal with in life involves knowledge and technologies not yet known. The best schools are collegial and collaborative. Good teaching is a team effort”- Linda Darling Drummon. To enhance the knowledge and technologies that have not yet been learned, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FOHS) has taken the initiative to collaborate with the Faculty of Medicine, Bioscience & Nursing (FOMBN) to give hands-on training on venipuncture and intravenous injection for our Medical Imaging students. Venipuncture is a process where a vein is pierced by a needle for either an intravenous injection or the removal of blood. Veins are favored over arteries because they have thinner walls thus are easier to pierce. There is also lower blood pressure in veins so the bleeding can be stopped faster and easier compared to arterial puncture (K. Lew, 2012). Venipuncture and intravenous injection are the most frequent invasive procedure done in the hospital to puncture a peri
