Is Internship Important?

IPE once again brought us another talk in its monthly series with the topic, High Impact Internship on 6th October 2022. Ms Vimalla Kerisnan, a Senior HR Executive at Everlife-Chemopharm shared her experience on internship and highlights how it would actually benefit both employers and the students.
It is important to understand the concept of internship itself for us to appreciate the values that will be gained from the internship.

Internship is a short-term work experience offered by companies—usually students, but not always—to get some entry-level exposure to a particular industry or field. The duration is usually 3 months.

Nowadays, most of big-capacity companies and even SMEs absorb fresh graduates who have completed their internship programmes into the company. Here some reasons why companies have internship programmes.

Benefit from the work interns do

Interns usually take on simple administrative duties, alleviating employees’ workload so they can focus on other tasks. But interns are not just administrative assistants − with the right mentoring and supervision, they can take on other more serious tasks as well.

Evaluate potential talents

Internship is a great way to train someone and become an acquaintance to the company. Internship a good platform to test the abilities of the interns before being absorb as employee. It’s like a trial period between the employer and the intern to decide whether the company is the right match for the intern. Therefore, an internship is a great way to train someone and become an acquaintance to the company.

Expose young professionals to their brand

Any interns who finishes their internship happy and content, it is very likely that they would be a powerful tool to spread the good message that the company is reliable and trustworthy employer. This would be a good company branding and receiving more talented young professional.

Learn from students’ fresh perspective

Interns usually freshly gained knowledge from industries, IT and apps; combined with their motivation of can-do attitude, they are eager to be part in contributing something for the company. To an employer, it is important to stay up to date with the latest trends in the industry for business sustainability and fresh ideas from interns is a good source of creative ideas and innovative solutions.

The big Q here is why would students need to get themselves hired for internship programme? Ms Vimalla shares some of the benefits of why students, fresh graduates, job-seekers need to consider applying for internship.

Exposure to the real world

Internship give an opportunity for interns to explore the “real world” working atmosphere. Upon completion of the internship, this experience gained will equip interns be ready for the real working world and career. Through an internship, an intern will start to understand company attitudes, policies, and inner workings through a new lens.

Interns learn more about themselves

Interns is generally to help to complete a variety of tasks. This allows interns to gain new experience in different aspects of job within the company. For that, it is a good chance to learn and decide whether the career is a good fit for the interns’ skill sets and interests. This way a student can avoid spending time and money on training for a career that does not really suit their abilities or needs.

Valuable skills

Responsibilities assigned to interns will trained them to prioritize tasks by order of importance or workload, as well as juggle a few different tasks at once. This polished the intern’s accountability, professionalism and initiative to accomplished the tasks.

Upon completion of the internship, the experience gained from the internship programme will help interns master professional soft skills such as communication skills etiquettes, punctuality and time management. These are skills that are key for success at a job and college and are highly sought after by companies.

Establish critical networking connections

Internship indirectly forge important professional connections for interns. Working with people within the same organisation, and getting chances to meet business partners of the organisation is invaluable opportunities for interns to develop networks and build contact in their fields.

Gives the interns a competitive edge

Many companies prefer to hire students who have completed internship programs. This is because many interns have better work habits, possess excellent soft skills, and have higher technical and industry skills since they have received formal job training and professional guidance. These are skills that are key for success at a job and are highly sought after by companies.

Ms Maria Deanna, shares her internship experiences at Everlife-Chemopharm is very interesting. She learnt to accomplished multi-tasking tasks upon the guidance of a senior staff who she attached with. Apart from works, she learnt that a good organisation would have a good working environment culture, and chances for the people to create bonding apart of works relation. This craft a positive working atmosphere whereby all of the personnel are motivated to do more for the company.

Ms Vimalla highlights that it is important for students, fresh grad, job-seeker to find internship programme that would give high impact experience to the interns. Things to be considered to find a good high impact internship programme are: 1) What type of internship: look at the role description and responsibilities for the task. This will help an intern to select suitable internship that will help to groom the relevant skills that are meaningful for the career goals. 2) Where to do an internship: grab an internship programme from company that offers job-training that is meaningful, impactful and motivates the intern to draw the best from themselves. 3) Who: an intern should be attached with whom will be mentoring the intern and help the intern to develop networking and skills that are relevant to career. 4) How to get an internship: start looking for internship programme as early as possible as there is limits number to hire intern. Prepare a resume and cover to apply for internship programme, and be ready for interview.

The sharing session from Ms Maria Deanna (the intern) and Ms Vimalla, is very thoughtful. I think it has chance most of the audience perception on that day that an internship programme help to drives and shapes a constructive students’ attitude that will influence the employers to recruit the student as potential talent to the company. It is an eye opening to all that through an internship, an excellent intern is highly likely to be absorb as an employer of the said organisation and this is one of good tool to gain work experience and to hired.
