Inclusive Curriculum Design and Assessments

Most of us must be familiar with the popular meme online that shows a fish, a monkey and an elephant asked to climb a tree as their assessment. This aptly describes the design of most curriculums today that may not be accessible to some under-represented groups of students like those from poor socio-economical backgrounds, certain ethnical backgrounds and those with disabilities. Inclusive curriculum design can be defined as “involving the design, planning and evaluation of programmes, courses and modules, not only in terms of their learning outcomes, content, pedagogy and assessment, but also in ways in which they engage and include the needs, interests and aspirations of all students” 1 . This can be achieved by minimizing the barriers to access learning materials, practical sessions and forms of assessments and also by considering the students' financial challenges. Use of assistive technologies such as text-to-speech or speech-to-text software, Braille or large font texts

The Shortage of Workers in the Hospitality Sector

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country in 2020, the tourism sector was very badly affected. Many hotels were forced to close as travelling came to a halt. Fast forward, 2 years later as Malaysia enters the endemic phase, the tourism sector is gaining back its momentum and businesses were starting to get back on track. Effective 1 April 2022, fully vaccinated international tourists were allowed to enter Malaysia and locals were able to enjoy the domestic tourism with the uplifting of the travel ban. This was very much welcomed by the hotels as they are now ready to welcome the guests and regain back the business. As the borders opened, the hotels now face another problem of hiring new employees. There is now an acute shortage of hospitality staff to operate the hotels. Some hotels are multi-tasking their employees. Staff are tasked from the food and beverage department to housekeeping and vice-versa to fulfil the demand of the guests. In the morning, the staff could be at the restau

On-Field Physiotherapy Support for Tennis Tournament at Penang Sports Club

On the 27th of August 2022, I and 3 of my course mates had the privilege to participate in an on-field physiotherapy support activity for a tennis tournament in Penang under the guidance of our Physiotherapy lecturer Mr. Muthukumaran. This tournament was organised by the Penang Sports Club (PSC) which is probably the largest private tennis facility in Malaysia with 10 artificial grass courts and 9 natural grass courts in the club grounds. On arriving there we were stationed near the court of play and asked to set up and be on our feet for anything that followed. The tournament was to begin at 10 am and continue until 5 pm that evening. One would think that as a sports physiotherapist our clientele would predominantly be from the young adult category. However, to our surprise, the majority of the participants there were from the older adult category, all of whom had been playing the sport for 30 years or longer, making this a particularly novel experience for us all. We saw a pletho
