The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) recently extended their congratulations to Dr Tan Bee Hui, who became the first indigenous person to earn the title of Dentist. JAKOA's message was shared on their TikTok page (@jakoamalaysia) based on a post made by the Malaysia Orang Asli Students' Association (PMOA) on their Facebook page. PMOA shared this announcement on their social media on September 30th.
Tan Bee Hui A/P Tan Boon Huat is MAHSA University Dental Faculty Alumni who successfully completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery earlier this year. She received her early education at SJK (C) Kuala Rompin and SMK Rompin before continuing her studies at Kolej Mara Banting.
It's understood that Tan Bee Hui's interest in education was driven by the dedication of her mother, who frequently taught her and her sibling at home. As a Jakun indigenous person, she believes that education has the power to change her family's destiny and break free from the cycle of poverty.
Tan Bee Hui's success story began with excellent results: 5A in the Primary School Evaluation Test (UPSR), 8A in the Lower Secondary Assessment (PMR), and 8A in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM). Not only was Tan Bee Hui academically accomplished, but she also actively participated in extracurricular activities. As the eldest of two siblings, she was an active member of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (PBSM) during her school years. Her involvement wasn't limited to the school level; she also engaged in various activities and associations during her university years. She played netball and was an active member of the Dental Student Society. Additionally, Tan Bee Hui was a member of the Malaysia Orang Asli Students' Association.
Serving in her hometown to contribute to the indigenous community, in the announcement, Tan Bee Hui delivered a message to all indigenous students, urging them to take pride in their heritage. She emphasized the importance of remembering their roots, traditions, and doing their utmost to assist their own community while inspiring those in need by extending help within their capabilities. She encouraged self-belief. She said, "I learned diligently just to be where I am today to prove that indigenous people can also become dentists. Now, I serve in the hospital where I was born to help my community." She added, "Never doubt yourself just because others may not believe in you. Value yourself, work hard, and never forget your roots. Do your best for yourself; life is too short to worry about what others will say."
We at MAHSA University would like to proudly congratulate Tan Bee Hui for being a role-model of success and vigilance to the younger generation of her tribe, upholding her heritage, and most especially for giving back to her community through her achievements.
All the best and always Be MORE!!
