Virtual Simulation in Medical Imaging Education

Virtual simulation is widely accepted as an effective pedagogy in Health Science education. Research has shown that virtual simulation improves knowledge retention, clinical reasoning and student satisfaction with learning. Other benefits of virtual simulation in education include the ability for instructors to provide experiential learning without the need for real human subjects (patients). The World Health Organization advises learning about patient safety through simulation as this provides practical experience without the traditional associated risks. As an educational tool, simulation exists in many valid forms including role play, inter-professional simulation and virtual reality simulation (M. T. Chau et al., 2022) The Faculty of Health Sciences MAHSA University has integrated virtual simulation in our teaching, particularly in our Medical Imaging programmes. In Medical Imaging, students are usually taught the technical and theoretical knowledge to perform all the radiographic

OPERANT CONDITIONING VS CLASSICAL CONDITIONING: HOW IT IS APPLIED IN THE CLASSROOM

Operant conditioning is a recognised and well-known behavioural learning process in which reinforcement makes a given stimulus increasingly effective at eliciting a certain response. The term "reinforcement" refers to a reward for an appropriate action in a particular circumstance. In other terms, conditioning is a technique used to encourage a particular behaviour. As a result, when an ineffectual object or signal cue becomes so much more effective, it makes the concealed responses obvious to everyone. The notion of conditioning is thus predicated on the understanding that learning establishes the connection between stimulus and response. Thus, the two primary theories of stimulus-response are at the core of the conditioning theory. Operant conditioning is a technique that uses rewards and punishments based on an individual's behaviour as a result of the consequences that led to the specific behaviour (Cherry, 2022). This outcome is similar to how someone learns how to b

Sharing the Gift of Abundance and Prosperity

The best part about being a Malaysian, is the opportunities we have through our cultural differences to always have something to celebrate. On the 18th of January, a special Mandarin Orange distribution was made between mentors and mentees which allowed the Faculty of Business, Hospitality, Accounting and Finance to engage with an out-of-the-classroom activity between students and lecturers of the faculty.  The Mandarin orange is an important symbol of the Chinese New Year.  The small citrus looks like the sun, and because the sun is aligned with the yang (positive) principle, it is a symbol of abundance and happiness. Originating from Southern China, the tradition of giving mandarin oranges is known as “song gam” in Cantonese. Coincidentally, it also means “giving gold”, which has been used as a symbol of conferring prosperity and well wishes to the recipient. A total of 170 students and 23 lecturers got together and celebrated the giving of prosperity.  But it was not just the act of

Green Concrete Hollow (GCH Block) System

In Malaysia, the demand for affordable and quality housing has increased throughout the years particularly in urban regions such as Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor Bahru. The demand is increasing because of the increasing population and high housing prices (Yin et al., 2019). Report by Department of Statistics Malaysia expressed that in year 2019, they were 32.6 million population and targeted to increase before the finish of year 2020. It likewise announced that 80% of the population earns less than RM 6,275 per month (DOSM, 2017). In the event that the definition of affordability being not more than 3 times of their yearly pay, then they are not having the option to purchase a house with value more than RM 300,000. Be that as it may, National Property Information Centre uncovered that just 21% of the total number of housing units launched in the year 2019 has a price tag beneath than RM 300,000 (NAPIC, 2019). The gap between the population housing demand and the housing price has as

THE FIVE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES THAT AFFECT PUBLIC HEALTH IN MALAYSIA

The environmental issues in Malaysia are having a negative impact on people's health both individually and collectively, particularly the vulnerable populations like the elderly, the economically vulnerable, pregnant women, and children. Malevolent malignancy, asthma, cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, and many other illnesses are closely linked to the rising pollution and water contamination levels. It is possible to protect life from the damaging toxic effects of pollutants and promote health if the numerous environmental issues that have an impact on health are appropriately addressed. Below are few environmental issues that can harm people's health and well being: Air pollution is a major environmental health concern that is caused by the presence of hazardous solid or liquid particles and certain gases in the air. These particles and gases can come from a variety of sources, including car and truck exhaust, factories, dust, pollen, mold spores, volcanoes, and

Addressing the Challenges of Integrating Technology In the Classroom

Teaching is one of the most fruitful careers you could have but it does come with its challenges – notably in the rural or remote areas and with the infusion of technology in teaching and learning process which have impacted teaching methodologies. Common challenges and concerns teachers experience when integrating technology in classroom include: Teacher Knowledge Many teachers are struggling to keep up with the times and utilise technology into classroom because they lack the knowledge and understanding of how to use the technology with all its features. It can be daunting, but the trick is to not be afraid of trying and experimenting with new technology, learn and improve as you go along and don’t use too many tools at once. Technology can be fun and students can get excited and motivated with the use of technology thus improving teaching and learning. Cost of new technology Another challenge is the cost of bringing new technology into the classroom. Not all school budgets are abl

A Hospitality Affair

If you often follow our news, you would have heard of our unique event held monthly called One Day in MAHSA. Well this event allows you to unleash your Superpowers to discover your true calling in your future career. In the last ODIM in January 2023, we were given the pleasure to attend to 200 students and teachers from Sekolah Menengah Engku Husain, Semenyih, Selangor.  Participants had so much fun doing hands-on activities such as napkin folding - a type of decorative folding process done with a napkin and it can be classified as an art or plain hobby. Artistically, napkin folding is most commonly found as a table decoration in fancy restaurants and for the best results, a clean, pressed, and starched square cloth (linen or cotton) napkin is used. Some of the napkin folding that were taught and practiced that day included, bird of paradise napkin folding, roses napkin folding, crown napkin folding, candle napkin folding and others. FOHS Lecturer Wan Adibah Nadiah Guest Speaker at UITM Webinar

A certain segment of the public considers those who struggle with their mental health to be weak. To a larger extent the public considers those diagnosed with a mental illness to be even weaker. Mental health is undeniably a stigmatized topic to discuss about especially in the workplace.
