RESILIENCE IN EDUCATION - Webinar by Winthrope Professor Marc Tennant AM

The Academic Affairs and EQUAL (AAE) Committee of MAHSA University organized its 7th Academic Transformation Series talk on the 28th of July 2022 with the title “Resilience in Education”. The guest speaker for the session was Winthrope Professor Dr. Marc Tennant AM, an internationally renowned academician who is currently the Deputy Chair of Academic Board at The University of Western Australia.

The event was attended by Prof. Dato Dr. Ikram Shah, Vice Chancellor of MAHSA University Group Directors, Directors, Deans and fellow academicians of MAHSA and began with an opening speech by the Chair of AAE committee and Senior Director Academic Assoc. Prof. Dr. Veronica Chua to welcome the guest speaker and also to set the tone for the theme of the day, “resilience”. 

With a little sharing on the background of the distinguished speaker, Prof. Veronica also highlighted the importance of resilience in education in preparation for future challenges as part of MAHSA’s academic transformation goals.

Prof. Marc then commenced his session and shared insights into resilience in higher education that was tremendously beneficial to the educators and academicians in bracing themselves for the challenges in education and knowing how to respond appropriately.

Prof Marc then shared his first-hand experiences of disaster preparedness in higher education and mitigation measures that were taken to overcome the problems that cropped up during the global pandemic. Prof Marc talked from both the perspectives of individuals and systems which hi highlighted are both equally applicable to us. He emphasized that 

resilience was not about doing the same things no matter what or staying in one place but it required a strong foundational set of principles and yet being able to be highly nimble and adaptable to evolving circumstances. He also talked about leadership characteristics and provided reflections on building strong foundational principles and leading people to provide system level resilience.  Prof Marc then shared his personal resilience experience which is at the core of establishing system resilience. 

The sharing was extremely beneficial to educators in MAHSA in helping our university become a more resilient education provider.

Shattering Stereotypes: First Malaysian Indigenous Dentist

The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) recently extended their congratulations to Dr Tan Bee Hui, who became the first indigenous person to earn the title of Dentist.
