Development of Multi-band Dielectric Resonator Antenna for 5G System

Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Rahim Sadiq Batcha receiving his Letter of Agreement from Dato' Dr Shahril Haniffa, Group Managing Director of MAHSA Group, alongside Prof. Dr. Alla Kesava Rao (COO of MAHSA Group of Educational Institutions) and Prof. Dr. Gopal Natesan (Director of EQUAL).

A research based project titled “Development of Multi-band Dielectric Resonator Antenna for 5G System” is being developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Rahim Sadiq Batcha, Faculty of  Engineering & Built Environment and IT, MAHSA University. The project is fully funded by Malaysia Resources Corporation Berhad George Kent (MRCBGK) under Industrial Collaboration Program (ICP) and Technology Depository Agency (TDA).

In response to the Malaysian Government’s desire for the nationwide implementation of 5G in the foreseeable future, this project proposes to develop a multi-band dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) for the 5G system. The said DRA is a promising candidate for 5G base stations employing multi-beam phased arrays. The 5G DRA array demonstrates reduced scanning losses, lower side lobe levels, and greater maximum scan angle compared to a conventional patch array using the same configuration and inter-element separation. The DRAs exhibit desired attributes such as high radiation efficiency, adaptation to different feeding mechanisms, and most importantly, ease of excitation of multiple modes. Also, the multiband DRA technology to achieve wide-band operation over the 5G frequency bands allows meeting the requirements of 5G applications with a unique device, which is beneficial to mobile network operators.

The commercialisation of this new 5G DRA would redefine the 5G connectivity in Malaysia, thus promoting the country as one of the pioneers in the ASEAN region. The outcome of this research is beneficial to the nation in terms of economic sectors, creation of new jobs, fulfilling the MCMC intention to the adoption of 5G, benefit to mobile operator and user trends (industry and general public), thus promoting our country aspiration to be a developed country in near future.

Based on the reports prepared by the National 5G Task Force (5G Task Force) under the stewardship of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), MAHSA University research team successfully obtained a financial grant from the Malaysia Resources Corporation Berhad George Kent (MRCBGK) under Industrial Collaboration Program (ICP) and Technology Depository Agency (TDA)

The project successfully secured a research grant from MRCBGK while development of the project is being carried out and led by Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Rahim Sadiq Batcha, Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment, and IT, MAHSA University.
