The 5th Malaysia International Dental Show 2022 was held from 20th to 22nd May at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, Petaling Jaya. This was the first in-person dental conference and trade fair to be held in Malaysia after a lapse of two years due to the covid-19 pandemic. MAHSA University and Malaysia Dental Industry Association collaborated in organizing the scientific conference and the trade fair respectively for the third time. AP Dr Kranthi Raja, Deputy Dean was the organising chairman for the scientific conference and was ably advised by Prof.Dr.Rosnah Zain, Dean Faculty of Dentistry MAHSA University.

Professor Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Hj. Mohamed Haniffa bin Hj Abdullah, Pro-chancellor and executive chairman, MAHSA University graced the occasion as the chief guest.

MAHSA University was well represented by the organizing committee for the scientific conference comprised of nine staff and 27 student volunteers who were responsible for the successful conduct of all activities especially the scientific sessions, workshops, e-poster competition, and students’ competition. The conference provided an excellent opportunity to interact with alumni who graduated from previous batches and turned up in considerable numbers.

The event was well received by the entire dental fraternity, 280 delegates registered for the conference and there were 1800 visitors to the trade fair. The scientific conference hosted 15 well-known speakers from across Southeast Asia on topics relevant to contemporary dental practice. The highlight was the panel discussion on endodontics with three eminent endodontists, Assoc. Prof. Dr Abhishek Parolia from IMU, Assoc. Prof . Dr Kranthi from MAHSA University, and Dr Rahul Rathi from AIMST University moderated by Prof. Kiran from MAHSA University.

There was an e-poster competition for undergraduate and postgraduate participants; the winners were Elvan Yeoh Yan Shin and Lee Ee Von from University Malaya and Dr Galvin Sim Siang Lin from AIMST respectively. In addition, a very interesting feature of the conference was the students’ hands-on competitions involving restorative dentistry. Students from across universities in Malaysia competed for the prizes which Lee Min Quan eventually won. Three workshops, one on adhesive dentistry and two on endodontics were also organized concurrently by various companies through their dealers.

Shattering Stereotypes: First Malaysian Indigenous Dentist

The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) recently extended their congratulations to Dr Tan Bee Hui, who became the first indigenous person to earn the title of Dentist.
