MAHSA International Dental Conference (Mi-DENT) 2022


The Faculty of Dentistry at MAHSA University organized the MAHSA International Dentistry Conference (MI-DENT) 2022, on a virtual platform on 24th and 25th June, 2022. Speakers from various nations across the globe participated to share their views on the theme “Dental Education - Current Updates.” The main aim of the conference was to bring dental practitioners, educators educationists, and other groups concerned in education to share their experiences on the advancements and developments in educational sciences. 

The entire conference was divided into three sessions, including a ‘Free Paper Presentation’ competition. The theme of the first session was “Preclinical and Clinical Teaching and Assessments”. Professor Dr. Chun-Hung Chu from the University of Hong Kong, was the first Keynote Speaker who shared his vision on ‘Global Citizenship in Dentistry’. This was followed by an ‘Opening Ceremony’ moderated by Dr. Ahbirami A/P Supramaniam. The opening ceremony was initiated with a welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Rosnah Zain, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, followed by the opening speech by Prof. Dr. Srikumar Chakravarthy, the Director for Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation. The second Keynote Speaker of the first session was Prof. Dr. Noor Hayaty Binti Abu Kasim, Visiting Professor, MAHSA University, who shared her insights on “Re-visiting Preclinical and Clinical Dentistry”. It was followed by a very fruitful and interactive session which was moderated by Associate Professor Dr.Kranthi Raja Kacharaju and Prof Dr Noor Hayaty, where various issues on Dental Education  were discussed.

The second session entitled ‘Application of Innovative Strategies in Enhancing Learning and Research, was initiated by Dr. Irma Josephina Savitri from Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia who shared her experience on ‘An overview of Teaching at Universitas Airlangga’.  It was followed by Prof. Dr. L Krishna Prasad from Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences, India who shared with us about ‘Novel teaching Practices in SIBAR’. Dr. Zahra Naime from the University of Malaya shared her views on ‘Innovative Approaches of Dental Education’ while Dr. Maria Angela Gonzalez from National University College of Dentistry, Philippines shared her experience on ‘Innovative Practices and Research in Dental Education. ‘Student directed Case-based Reasoning (SD-CBR) and the experience in MAHSA university’ was presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Santhosh Kotian which was followed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deepak Pateel G.S who spoke on the ‘Role of Formative Assessment in Dental Education’.  The session was moderated by Dr. Ang Yee from MAHSA University. The presentation sessions was followed by a forum where all the guest speakers discoursed their opinion and exchanged their viewpoints with Associate Professor Dr. Kranthi Raja Kacharaju and also with the participants. The first day ended with the day’s overview by Prof. Dr. Rosnah Zain.

The second day started with the session on ‘Free Paper’ competition moderated by Dr. Sangita Biswas, Faculty of Dentistry. Twelve participants from Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia (University of Malaya; Universiti Teknologi MARA; MAHSA University; Diponegoro University, Indonesia; and Centro Escolar University, Phillipines) participated in the competition which was judged by Dr. Annarani A/P Kanagaraja and Dr. Sulagna Dutta. The third session of the conference entitled “Experiential Learning and Micro-credentialing in Dental/Medical Education” began with the presentation of Dr. Syazwani Binti Mohd Fadzil, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, who spoke on ‘Experiential Learning - an Alternate Pathway towards Higher Education’. This was followed by Prof Dr Rosnah Zain, MAHSA University, who presented on ‘An Insight into Micro-credentialing for Medical and Health Sciences’. A follow up lecture on micro-credentialling was delivered by Prof Dato’ Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Abu Hassan from University Technology Mara (UITM) on  ‘Micro-credentialing in Dental Postgraduate Education’. The session was moderated by Ms. Jannah, Faculty of Dentistry. The conference ended by the prize distribution to the winners and participants of paper presentation competition and a closing remark by Prof.Dr Rosnah Zain, Dean Faculty of Dentistry, MAHSA university.

The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) recently extended their congratulations to Dr Tan Bee Hui, who became the first indigenous person to earn the title of Dentist.
