The Doctor I am Today

At my Convocation Ceremony, 2019 I'm Shanan Teo and I am a MAHSA MBBS Graduate, Class of 2019.  I commenced my housemanship in September 2020 at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). During my housemanship, I passed the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) 1 and 2 Examinations, as well as other examinations - IELTS, Clinical Assessment and the Situational Judgement Test, all of which allowed me to obtain a job in the United Kingdom for Foundation Training.  I often look back at my time at MAHSA with great fondness.  In my opinion, the strengths of MAHSA are the detailed clinical postings and the comprehensive structure of the course. I was able to consolidate my knowledge that I had learned in my pre-clinical years and been able to see for the first time unique presentations on real patients and how to treat the person, not the disease alone. Lecturers at MAHSA are very dedicated and they provided me with a lot of support. They were patient...

The term "Shari'ah" is occasionally used to refer to the ethical guidelines that many Muslims adhere to. The Islamic financial system includes the Islamic banking system, the Islamic money market, the Islamic insurance market, also known as ‘takaful’, the Islamic capital market, and the specialised financial institutions that offer alternate forms of funding.                                Figure 1.  Global Islamic Finance assets ($ billion) Source: World Bank report 2020 The l ongevity of Islamic finance is not limited to Muslims or Muslim-majority countries; instead, it has a broad appeal that extends to non-Muslims and western nations. Financial experts and professionals contend that sharia-based financial products and se...

Through the Microscope: The Aphrodisiac Potential of Tongkat Ali Hitam

Mankind has depended on various types of herbs and plants through the century when it comes to needing a boost in sexual performance – the search for an aphrodisiac effect is uncommon, and with more and more studies being conducted to determine a larger group of such plants at our disposal, this search has become more refined thanks to R&D. To many, the name Tongkat Ali is famously used to generally imply an aphrodisiac supplement, but within Malaysia, there are several distinct names that serve this purpose - Eurycoma longifolia (the actual Tongkat Ali), Smilax myosotiflora (Ubi Jaga) for men and Labisia pumila (Kacip Fatimah) for women. In fact, Tongkat Ali itself is synonymous with at least three plants in Malaysia - the three most widely used plants include Eurycoma longifolia, Polyalthia bullata and Stema tuberosa . Through the Microscope this month brings you a study which was done by Dr Srikumar, affiliated to MAHSA University, in collaboration with Dr Jaya Vejayan...

The lack of access to oral healthcare due to cost, insurance coverage, and other social determinants of health in communities has spurred the creation of several innovative models to address this barrier. Oral healthcare integration into primary care and mobile oral healthcare delivery are two prominent models that have been deployed effectively in certain areas.  Returning the mouth to the body is by coordinating oral health and primary care services. Personal Branding: How Soon Should You Start Thinking About It?

If you could describe yourself in one world, what would it be? Now are you... Type 1: Wondering which word you are because you have no clue? Or Type 2: Have too many words in hand that you don’t know which to place first?  If you are type 1, then it’s time to evaluate and find that word, if not ask the opinions of courageous people who dare to tell you the truth. You’ll be surprised to learn what you are perceived as by another. See if you can re sonate with that and decide if you want to own it, if not, continue to grow and discover it by keeping this question at the back of your head. If you are type 2, then find the common factor between those words. You’re probably holding on to many but they are synonyms to one. But if they are vastly different, find your dominant trait. We all have 1, even as an ambidextrous, my right hand is more dominant than my left. That one word is your focus, your dominance, your story, your brand. If how you see yourself is what you expe...

INFLATION – KRYPTONITE TO THE RETIREMENT PURCHASING POWER

If our future financial planning does not account the inflation factor, then, we are making a big mistake. Inflation is going to play a major in our future. If our financial advisor does not discuss the impact of inflation on our future plans, then it is time we consider looking for a new advisor. Normally, people love to create plans for their future retirement without considering inflation. Society often tells us that we will get rich by taking a 3% salary increase and saving our money. We will feel contented with this fact, until we realize that the ‘raise’ does not even cover half of the current inflation rate! In a study by Food Crisis Prevention Network (Réseau de Prévention des Crises Alimentaires, (RCPA)), year 2021 indicated inflation remained a primary driver of acute food insecurity in the area, particularly in the Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. Food price rises were partly linked to greater transportation costs as a result of COVID-19 containmen...
