What is a TESL Programme?

Taking TESL courses is linked to increased options to work as a foreign language teacher, better pay, travel opportunities, and the chance to explore new places and cultures. TESL is an acronym for Teaching English as a Second Language.

It involves the teaching of English in places where the language is used frequently in daily life but not as the native tongue. After completing this programme, you will be able to teach English as a second language in public and private education institutions.

The TESL programme at MAHSA University offers everyday opportunities to practise speaking and listening in a foreign language. The key to learning anything is to listen. Through these classes, you can learn to speak with others in a way that is more informal and appropriate for that culture. Learning a foreign language will make you sound less like a tourist and make you feel more at home among the locals simply because you will be able to communicate with them more easily.

Since they themselves are not fluent English speakers, many students mistakenly believe that the TESL programme is designed to help them improve their language skills. But the truth is that even though you will have the possibility to steadily increase your command of the English language over the duration of your programme of study, it's likely that you will still find it difficult to keep ahead. If you’re not proficient enough, you may end up plagiarising your work. A fairly good command of English is essential before you get started in studying TESL.

The Diploma in TESL at MAHSA University combines assessed teaching practice with academic study into aspects of language teaching and learning such as ELT methodology, use of technologies, materials, language analysis and second language acquisition. As a result, our graduates become effective communicators in the English Language with knowledge of contextual and global challenges in TESL, well-equipped with skills in pedagogy and ICT and can carry out research as a life- long learning process. Also, by using a combination of learning methods and assessments such as experimental teaching sessions, seminars, and peer language teaching observations, students will find meaningful ways to teach.

Although any English-speaking individuals are still permitted to work as private tutors and teachers, they are not authorised to instruct in public schools. A Diploma in Education (TESL) or equivalent qualification is required to teach English. As you accumulate more experience, you can pursue other non-teaching positions within the field. Other job options include school administration board, state education department and education ministry, teaching quality assurance, education material developer or even venture into business, public relations, media and content writing as well as advertising and marketing. Your fluency in the English language will give you an edge in the competitive job market.

Inspired by the noble profession of teaching and the multitude of career options offered by TESL? Come and join our Diploma of TESL programme at MAHSA University.
