MAHSA University had the esteemed privilege of hosting Datuk
Dr. Kuljit Singh on the 6th of July as the eminent speaker at the 1st
Distinguished Lecture Series for 2023. The lecture, titled “Challenges in
Healthcare in Malaysia in the 21st Century with the Growth of AI," ignited
thought-provoking discussions among the audience.
Addressing the prevalent concern about Artificial
Intelligence (AI) potentially replacing human jobs, Datuk Dr. Kuljit's opening
statement resonated with everyone present. He challenged the notion of AI as a
threat and emphasized the importance of embracing this transformative
technology. Instead of fearing AI, he advocated upskilling to harness its
potential for the betterment of medicine and healthcare.
Drawing attention to AI's omnipresence in our daily lives,
from navigation apps like Waze to monitoring health through smartwatches, Dr.
Kuljit highlighted the need to adapt and stay ahead of this technology. He
emphasized that humans contribute to AI's growth through inputs, and thus, it
is imperative to cultivate our smartness around it.
While AI has profound applications in education and
knowledge growth, Dr. Kuljit also highlighted its limitations, citing ChatGPT
as an example. As educators, he stressed the responsibility to curb AI's misuse
in students, ensuring that future generations retain critical thinking and creativity.
The lecture, spanning an engaging hour, further sparked
insightful discussions during the question and answer session. The event's
success was enhanced by the esteemed presence of Pro-Chancellor and Executive
Chairman Senator Prof Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Hj Haniffa bin Hj Abdullah, Professor
Dato’ Dr. Ishak bin Abdul Razak, Pro-Chancellor, Prof Dato’ Dr. Ikram Shah bin
Ismail, Vice-Chancellor, Deans, Directors, and members of the academic
community of MAHSA University.
The event commenced with a warm welcome note from
Pro-Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr. Ishak, followed by an introduction of the
distinguished speaker by Prof Dato’ Dr. Ikram. The session culminated with a
token of appreciation presented to Datuk Dr. Kuljit Singh by Senator Tan Sri
Haniffa.
Overall, the lecture served as a thought-provoking platform, encouraging attendees to view AI as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat. MAHSA University's commitment to fostering constructive dialogue and continuous learning was evident throughout the event, and the insightful discussions will undoubtedly contribute to further advancements in healthcare and education in Malaysia.
