First Aid at the Workplace (FAWP) Workshop for MAHSA University Staff

The Environmental Health and Safety Department, Faculty of Health Sciences (FOHS) in collaboration with the group Human Resources Department of MAHSA University, recently organized a two-day First Aid at the Workplace (FAWP) workshop on 24th and 25th May 2023. The workshop, conducted by trainers from St. John Ambulance Malaysia for 15 staff of MAHSA University, was meant to equip participants with essential first aid skills for emergencies and injuries at the workplace thereby ensuring a safer work environment with better work security for MAHSA University employees.

 The workshop covered a comprehensive range of topics essential for handling emergencies in the workplace. The session commenced with a focus on understanding First Aid Priorities, stressing the importance of safety and swift assessment of casualties.

 Participants were then guided through techniques to manage Loss of Consciousness situations effectively. Trainers demonstrated how to assess responsiveness, clear airways, and position unconscious individuals in the recovery position. These practical sessions equipped participants with the necessary skills to provide immediate care  in the case of an accident or an illness, to save lives and prevent further complications from injury and pain and promote recovery.


Demonstration & Practice: Respiratory and choking incidents



Another critical aspect addressed during the workshop was the management of Respiratory Problems and Choking incidents. Participants learned to recognize signs of airway obstruction and received training on proper techniques to clear obstructions. The hands-on sessions provided valuable experience in responding promptly to such life-threatening situations.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the Introduction to Automated External Defibrillator (AED) were significant highlights of the workshop. Participants acquired the skills necessary to perform life-saving chest compressions and rescue breathing during cardiac emergencies. Additionally, they were introduced to AEDs, understanding their role in resuscitation efforts and their effective usage in critical situations.

Management of Wounds & Bandaging techniques


Medical emergencies, including seizures, allergic reactions, and diabetic emergencies, were thoroughly discussed, enabling participants to recognize and respond appropriately. The workshop also focused on educating participants about bone and spinal injuries, soft tissue injuries, and fractures. Valuable skills were imparted, such as proper lifting and handling techniques for casualties, ensuring the well-being of both the rescuer and the injured.

Wounds and Bleeding, as well as the recognition and management of Shock, were discussed extensively. The workshop covered wound care techniques, controlling bleeding, and immediate response to shock. Participants gained practical skills in dressing wounds and effectively applying bandages, fostering confidence in managing injuries at the workplace.

Burns, Scalds, and Poisoning incidents were also covered during the workshop. Participants learned immediate care and proper management of burn and scald injuries. The trainers emphasized the importance of quick action and appropriate response to minimize the severity of these injuries. The First Aid at the Workplace (FAWP) workshop organized by FOHS and Group HR of MAHSA University was a resounding success. Participants gained essential knowledge and practical skills that will be invaluable in handling emergencies. All participants passed the final assessment and earned First Aider at the Workplace Certification which is valid for 3 years and recognised by Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Malaysia.

Equipped with their new skills, these 15 participants will form the First Aider support system at MAHSA University

MAHSA University continuously strives to enhance employee well-being and safety at work and this workshop is another significant step towards creating a safer working environment for the MAHSA workforce.
