Uniting Dental Student through Sports

 


18 & 19 June 2022: The National Dental Inter Varsity Games (NDIVG) 2022 which was proudly hosted by MAHSA University brought together thirteen universities with eight-hundred participants onto MAHSA Campus in Bandar Saujana Putra, Selangor, to compete in eleven different sporting events. NDIVG is an annual national sports event hosted by one of the thirteen dental universities in Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysian Dental Students’ Association (MDSA). The Faculty of Dentistry of MAHSA University was appointed as the host for NDIVG in 2020. However, due to the pandemic, it was postponed and fortunately, as things progressively improved, this event was successfully held on the last weekend.


The eleven sporting events which allowed both participants and spectators to enjoy the thrilling excitements of heart-throbs and screams till they lost their voices were track and field, swimming, badminton, table tennis, futsal, volleyball, basketball, dodgeball, tug of war, chess, and carom. Universities which participated were, Malaysia Allied Health Science Academy University (MAHSA), Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University (AIMST), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), International Medical University (IMU), Lincoln University College (LUC), Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM), Penang International Dental College (PIDC), Segi University & Colleges (SEGi), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), University of Malaya (UM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

At the opening ceremony, Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Hj Mohamed Haniffa, the Founder, Pro-Chancellor and Executive Chairman of MAHSA University, welcomed everyone and congratulated each and every participant for signing up to compete in the series of sporting events. Tan Sri Haniffa addressed them all as champions for their sheer determination to compete while wishing them all the best. The two-day event started as early as 6 a.m. and went right into the final hour of the night with the dodgeball event calling it a day. Day two ended with the prize giving ceremony which gave away 360 medal for each and every male, female and mixed categories which the eleven events encompassed. The best Male Athlete went to Wong Wei Shen from University Malaya and the Best Female Athlete went to Ooi Yei Kie of MAHSA University. The Overall Champion for the NDIVG 2022 went to AIMST University who bagged the most points for the medals they had won. MAHSA University was the defending Champion of that title which they had taken in the last NDIVG in 2019. A big congratulation goes out to all who participated.

Also at this two-day event were, Prof. Dr. Zamri bin Radzi Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of University Malaya, Prof. Madya Dr. Tuti Ningseh Mohd Dom, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry UKM, Dr. Ainuddin Yushar Yusof, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry USIM, Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Termizi Bin Zamzuri, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, SEGI University; Dr Aida Nur Ashikin Abdul Rahman, Dean of UiTM’s Faculty of Dentistry, the Malaysian Dental Student Advisor (MDSA), Dr. Nor Atika Md Ashar, and Deputy Deans and staff representatives from each university, all giving their support to their teams and encouragement to all athletes, irrespective of their university.

The event was a great success as it achieved its prime objectives in producing students who excelled in both academic and physical activities while strengthening the bond among all the dental students across the Malaysian Dental Universities. These efforts help to forge new friendships with dental students from different universities, incorporate higher moral values, benevolence, and fighting spirit among the students as well as develop leadership skills and foster qualities of cooperation, tolerance, consideration, trust, and responsibility while increasing their self-esteem through extracurricular activities and the opportunity for them to interact respectfully and show kindness to people from all walks of life. The success of this event rest in the hands of both the participants and the organising committee led by the Dean of Faculty of Dentistry, MAHSA University, Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Mohd. Zain, Assoc. Prof Dr. Prathap Chandar Manivannan, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, MAHSA University and Advisor of the NDIVG 2022 Organising Committee, Organizing Student Chairperson, Lee Sher Maine and President of MDSA: Tony Leing Wen Hau.

Applauds were aplenty by special guests and students as to how well the events were organised and praises for the hospitality and care given to them. The Advisor, Prof Dr Prathap said that it would not have been a possible success without the constant support of the MAHSA Management, and the cooperation of all the Deans from the participating universities, and the volunteers too did a fantastic job at running each sports events. NDIVG 2023 will be hosted by SEGI University as the NDIVG 2022 event ended with the official hand-over of the NDIVG Flag between the respective Deans of both MAHSA University and SEGI University.
