Exhibition Visit: The Evolution of Malaysian Nurse Uniform

Us at the National Museum

With Puan Ajimah Hassan – Retired Principal Matron, Nursing Division, MOH and

Nursing Lecturer, School of Nursing, FOMBN. MAHSA University

On 12th June 2022 (Sunday), 9 nursing students from MAHSA University Diploma in Nursing program participated in a Program in Conjunction with the month long exhibition on “The Evolution of Malaysian Nurses’ Uniform in the Ministry of Health Malaysia. The group was chaperoned by Mr. Sebastian Ng. This program was held at the National Museum of Malaysia (Muzium Negara). The objective of this program was to inform the public as well as nurses regarding the nursing profession in general and the evolution of the uniform used in particular.  It also acts as an inspiration for young nurses and future nurses to embark on the noble profession as well as appreciate the services and efforts of the previous nurses in raising the nursing profession to what it is today. Our entourage arrived at 9.00am and proceeded to the registration counter. As we had ample time before the start of the official program. we visited the exhibition hall of the museum, where the information of the evolution of nurses’ uniforms in Malaysia, the origin of International Nurses Day and the history of the Nursing schools in Malaysia were exhibited.

Two of our students, Olivia Chan Li Man and Nur Farisha Binti Mohd Azam participated in a quiz competition organized by Nursing Division, Ministry of Health, Malaysia. The competition started at 10:00 am where a team of two nursing students is required to answer ten questions about coronavirus and, hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) within 15 minutes. After that, we had to pick a random question, which asked about the general history of nursing. Our group was asked the question “I chose to become a nurse, because…”, Nur Farisha shared her story when she was admitted into a hospital for a week due to an accident and, there she saw how the nurses treated their patients professionally, which inspired her to be a professional nurse.

At 11:00 a.m. guests were welcomed with a performance, performed by the nurses of Banting Hospital. This was followed by a Drama about the History of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, and then the nurses from Hospital Kuala Lumpur presented a dance on “hand hygiene”. After the amazing performances there was a speech from The Ministry of Health, Malaysia and the winners of the quiz were later announced. To our surprise, our group received a consolation prize. Although it was just a consolation prize but on the good note, we had a wonderful experience and above all we had not gone back empty handed. The program ended at 12:00 noon.

My peers and I can confidently say that we have learned a lot from this visit to the National Museum and the activities in the program. We have learned on how the nursing world have drastically change to the better in the course of a very short timeframe, however it was not all smooth sailing. We learnt of the sacrifices of our predecessors and senior nurses in the provision of better and safe heath care services to the population. As a soon-to-be registered nurses, this program in Conjunction with The Evolution of Malaysian Nurses’ Uniform Exhibition allow us to appreciate and feel the efforts of former nurses in advancing the nursing profession.
