The Real Spark of Inspiration: Extracurricular Activities In Higher Education

 On 16th June 2022 The Academic Affairs and EQUAL (AAE) team held their 6th  Academic Transformation Series activity which was a talk on “The Real Spark of Inspiration: Extracurricular Activities In Higher Education”. Our AAE Committee Chairperson, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Veronica Chua gave her welcoming address before the Opening speech by our Vice Chancellor Prof .Dato’ Dr. Ikram Shah. The invited speaker for the day was Prof Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohd Saleh bin Jaafar who is currently the President of the Academy of Professors Malaysia and Chairman of the Talent Development Committee Academy Sains Malaysia. Prof. Dato’ Salleh is also the formerly the deputy director general of higher education Malaysia and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Universiti Putra Malaysia.


Prof. Dato’ Salleh began his session by putting into context extracurricular activities in higher education, ie to produce well-rounded students that have holistically developed during their student journey in the institution. He then briefly discussed the challenges of educating Gen Y, Gen Z and Generation Alpha in comparison, and how heutagogy, peeragogy and cybergogy are becoming more mainstream in higher education. He then went through the different types of extracurricular activities and highlighted the MOHE initiative SULAM, where academic curricula is blended with extracurricular activities

The presentation concluded with some advice on how institutions can support extracurricular activity development through student and staff empowerment.


The session was so interesting and engaging that both the speaker as well as the audience lost track of time and the session stretched on for almost an hour past the schedule. Feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive with many requesting a follow-up session with Dato’ Salleh.

Shattering Stereotypes: First Malaysian Indigenous Dentist

The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) recently extended their congratulations to Dr Tan Bee Hui, who became the first indigenous person to earn the title of Dentist.
