Embracing Cultural Diversity: A Transformative Field Trip to Ilham Gallery Exhibition Centre

Embarking on a cultural field trip is an exceptional opportunity to broaden horizons, foster a deeper understanding of diverse cultures, and celebrate the vibrant motifs and elements of human heritage. On 26th May 2023, a group of 7 Diploma in Engineering students, along with 2 Be More Lecturers led by Ms. Siti Nurul Nadiya, ventured to the Ilham Gallery Exhibition Centre, where the captivating exhibition "Lift The Tikar!" awaited them.

The exhibition showcased works by Yee I-Lann in collaboration with Dusun and Murut weavers from Keningau in inland Sabah and Bajau Sama DiLaut weavers on Pulau Omadal in Semporna, on the border of the Sulu and Celebes seas, as well as dancers and film-makers based in Kota Kinabalu. This unique collaboration weaved together diverse visual languages, art histories, stories, philosophies, economies, and geographies, creating a profound tapestry of shared experiences.

The centerpiece of the exhibition was the "tikar," perceived as a communal site and a space of culture where the personal and public realms converge. The "tikar" holds stories and knowledge, strengthening the bonds within communities and connecting individuals to their heritage. It serves as a space for various activities such as sleeping, eating, praying, and celebrating, among others. The exhibition aimed to explore how the "tikar" in form and concept can inspire contemplation about art, power, language, and societal shaping.

As part of the Ethos of Life For Self and Society (MCV4133) subject, this trip holds significant value and aligns perfectly with its core principles. The subject focuses on developing society, values, and the importance of culture and togetherness, and this trip beautifully illustrates and reinforces those concepts.

After the visit, the students engaged in thoughtful reflection, answering a series of questions that encouraged them to delve deeper into their understanding of the exhibition and its relevance to cultural issues:
  • In your opinion, why is the "tikar" an effective space for the exchange of culture and stories?
  • Can you think of any other objects or spaces which you perceive to be a communal site?
  • Reflect on its significance in your life, considering memories, events, and history associated with it.
  • How do space and objects contribute to one's sense of identity and belonging?
  • Reflect on how and why the act of coming together and sharing stories can build a sense of community and foster relationships. Why do you think a sense of community plays an important role in navigating contemporary society?

The success of this trip stems from its ability to promote cultural awareness and understanding. Immersing themselves in unfamiliar cultural contexts, these students gained a greater appreciation for diversity, fostering empathy and breaking down stereotypes. The trip also allowed them to connect with history and heritage, witnessing the profound impact of past civilizations on contemporary society.

Moreover, this field trip nurtured global citizenship, encouraging participants to appreciate and preserve diverse cultures while promoting sustainable practices. It fostered personal growth and self-discovery, as students stepped outside their comfort zones, becoming more adaptable and resilient.

In conclusion, this transformative field trip to the Ilham Gallery Exhibition Centre exemplifies the significance of cultural exchange in our global society. By embracing cultural diversity, connecting with history, and fostering personal growth, we create informed global citizens who celebrate and respect the richness of our world's cultural tapestry. As we learn from one another's traditions and build bridges that transcend borders, we pave the way for a harmonious and inclusive future.
