Capturing Architectural Beauty at Stadthuys, the Red Square, Malacca

On the 6th of May 2023, students from MAHSA's Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and IT embarked on a captivating journey of freehand sketching at Stadthuys, the iconic red square in Malacca. As part of the First Year Architectural Technology program, this hands-on activity allowed students to explore their creativity, enhance their sketching skills, and develop a keen perception of form and space. With the guidance of two lecturers, five students dedicated themselves to capturing the architectural beauty of Stadthuys through the artistic medium of freehand sketching.

The Importance of Freehand Sketching:
For first-year students, mastering the art of freehand sketching holds immense significance. It serves as a catalyst for creative thinking, fostering a positive mindset and encouraging innovative thoughts. Through freehand sketching, students cultivate their ability to interpret and visualize architectural elements, honing their sketching skills and deepening their understanding of form and space. This fundamental skill empowers budding architects to express their ideas and concepts with precision and artistic flair.

Immersed in the Splendor of Stadthuys:
Under the warm afternoon sun, the students embarked on their artistic endeavor, seeking the perfect angle to capture the essence of Stadthuys. With their sketchbooks and pencils in hand, they devoted nearly 1 hour and 30 minutes to meticulously recreate the architectural details of this historic landmark. Immersed in the surroundings of the red square, the students honed their observation skills, translating the intricate elements of Stadthuys onto paper. Their dedication and focus allowed them to overcome distractions and maintain a deep connection with their sketches.

Positive Feedback and Growth:
The freehand sketching activity at Stadthuys garnered positive feedback from the participating students. Engaging in this immersive exercise not only enhanced their technical drawing skills but also instilled a sense of appreciation for the architectural heritage of Malacca. The students' commitment to the task enabled them to develop patience, attention to detail, and a heightened awareness of their surroundings. These invaluable experiences will undoubtedly contribute to their growth as future architects and designers.

Embracing the Intersection of Art and Architecture:
The initiative taken by MAHSA's Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and IT to organize this freehand sketching activity demonstrates their commitment to providing a well-rounded education to their students. By integrating artistry with architecture, students are encouraged to explore new dimensions of creativity and expand their artistic capabilities. The practical application of freehand sketching bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in their future careers.

The freehand sketching activity at Stadthuys, the red square in Malacca, was an enriching experience for the students of MAHSA's Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and IT. By immersing themselves in the process of capturing the architectural beauty of this iconic landmark, students honed their sketching skills, nurtured their creative thinking, and gained a deeper appreciation for the harmony between art and architecture.
