Researcher Spotlight : Dr. Sohail Ahmad

 




Dr Sohail Ahmad is currently serving as the Deputy Dean (Undergraduate) and Head of Department (Pharmacy Practice) in the Faculty of Pharmacy of MAHSA University. He completed his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) from The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan in 2011 and Master of Science (MSc) (Clinical Pharmacy) from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia in 2013. During his MSc, he conducted research by enrolling patients from the Hospital Selayang and Sungai Buloh, Malaysia. Following completion of his MSc, he joined MAHSA University in 2016 as a lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice.

Dr Sohail has been actively involved in National-Medical-Research-Registry-(NMRR)-approved research projects in Malaysian healthcare settings. His main research aims are to improve patients’ self-management of chronic diseases using innovative methods and to explore parameters of population health at global, regional, and national levels. Recently, his research team developed the design and protocol for AsmaBoleh, a mobile application to identify the risk factors of asthma attack, predict asthma attacks and improve asthma management.  He worked on the project in collaboration with researchers from the Malaysian Thoracic Society (MTS).

Being successful and competitive is a long journey for all researchers at various faculties of MAHSA University at both internal and external academic and research fronts. Consistent with the vision and mission of the Faculty of Pharmacy (FOP), Dr Sohail has successfully published over thirty research articles in leading international peer-reviewed journals including Lancet, Nature Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Pharmacotherapy, Respirology, Journal of Asthma, Value in Health, Frontiers in Pharmacology and Frontiers in Public Health

In this short research journey, he has received various highly coveted national and international research awards, including:

  • Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) Assembly Education Award 2021 (Japan)
  • Highest Number of Publications Award (Second Position), MAHSA University (Malaysia)
  • European Respiratory Society (ERS) Young Investigator Award 2018 (Taiwan)
  • International Society of Pharmacoeconomics, and Outcome Research (ISPOR) Travel Award 2018 (Japan)
  • The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) Travel Award 2018 (Thailand)
  • Lung Foundation Malaysia (LFM) Education and Travel Awards 2015 and 2017 (Malaysia)
  • Best Researcher Award 2018, MAHSA University (Malaysia)
  • Gold Medal and Diamond Award 2013 (innovation category) in Invention, Innovation and Design Expo (IIDEX) (Malaysia)
  • Bronze Medal in Bio-Malaysia, Asia Pacific Conference and Exhibition 2013 (Malaysia)

Dr Sohail considers himself blessed to have had unique personal and professional experiences including collaboration with international organisations and professional bodies such as the Global Burden of Disease (USA), a COVID-19 task force (IHME), as ISPOR Faculty Advisor (World Health Organisation), having had scientific publications in well-reputed journals, conducting data analysis using different software (SAS®, SPSS®, Bond & Fox®, and WINSTEP®) and being a member of the MAHSA Family. These experiences have significantly helped him to conduct clinical and population health-related studies as a principal investigator as well as a collaborator. He has an implicit faith that the researchers of MAHSA University will keep on contributing to the betterment of humanity through science and technology.

Shattering Stereotypes: First Malaysian Indigenous Dentist

The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) recently extended their congratulations to Dr Tan Bee Hui, who became the first indigenous person to earn the title of Dentist.
