Addressing the Challenges of Integrating Technology In the Classroom

Teaching is one of the most fruitful careers you could have but it does come with its challenges – notably in the rural or remote areas and with the infusion of technology in teaching and learning process which have impacted teaching methodologies. Common challenges and concerns teachers experience when integrating technology in classroom include:

Teacher Knowledge

Many teachers are struggling to keep up with the times and utilise technology into classroom because they lack the knowledge and understanding of how to use the technology with all its features. It can be daunting, but the trick is to not be afraid of trying and experimenting with new technology, learn and improve as you go along and don’t use too many tools at once. Technology can be fun and students can get excited and motivated with the use of technology thus improving teaching and learning.

Cost of new technology

Another challenge is the cost of bringing new technology into the classroom. Not all school budgets are able to sustain this additional inclusion especially in the rural and under-developed areas. But this is changing with learning technologies and tools becoming more affordable and more widely available, even on basic laptops and smartphones.

MAHSA University’s Centre for Education and Language offers a variety of programmes on education such as Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language. TESL programme is very comprehensive in providing students with the right knowledge and appropriate skills that they need to be a good future educator and address these challenges. Subjects such as ESL Methodology and Curriculum Design explores the variety of materials to be used in class especially multimedia materials. Not only that, lecturers in MAHSA University are also equipped with the newest technology skills such as converting the lessons into recorded lectures so students can work at their own pace and using gamified learning in classroom such as Kahoot or Quizizz so the learning is fun and advantageous.

So the Centre of Education and Language of MAHSA University we not only actively use Education technology in the teaching of our students but we also teach our graduates who will become Early Childhood Education and English Teachers in the future, how to incorporate Educational Technology into their teaching.
