My Journey as a Physiotherapy Student at MAHSA University

Words by: Lau Cye Ber
Diploma in Physiotherapy
Alumni Batch 52

My journey as a physiotherapy student at MAHSA University started on 11 September 2017 and has been wonderful and memorable. I am interested in physiotherapy as I can change lives by enabling people to improve their health and their quality of life and wellbeing. It's a profession that works with people to identify and maximise their ability to stay mobile and functional, which is an essential part of what it means to be healthy.

In order to pursue my course in physiotherapy, my family recommended MAHSA University as it is one of the best known university for health science courses. MAHSA University provides a wide range of opportunities for building knowledge, skills and professional networks, helping its students in terms of management, teaching, communication, and professionalism, etc. Not only that, the experience shared by a family friend who was a graduate of MAHSA piqued my interest in studying physiotherapy at MAHSA University.

During my Diploma Programme, I was offered different interesting modules, to enrich my skills and knowledge related to physiotherapy practice. There was a wide range of interesting modules like women’s health, neurology, musculoskeletal, and anatomy, but my personal favourite module was electrotherapy. I enjoyed learning about different types of electrical modalities and how these electrical modalities are using electrical energy for treatment purposes, such as wound healing, bone healing after fractures, improving pain was quiet challenging.  Aside from the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom teaching, the blending of e-learning activities also elevated my overall learning experience.

Additionally, I was also given the opportunity to carry out my clinical placements at various hospitals and rehabilitation facilities.  This was one a wonderful learning opportunity that MAHSA University gave me to transfer theory into practice and build critical hands-on skills, within a clinical environment.  I was very nervous about my first placement which was in Hospital Melaka for eight weeks because it was the first time I would be applying my knowledge into practice. My next clinical placement was with the National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM) Ampang and Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah for four weeks where I was exposed to different kinds of clinical settings such as musculoskeletal, women’s health, and geriatric care. This helped me increase my confidence level and enabled me to assess and evaluate case studies of patients. My last placement was ato Diagmagnetic Physio Centre Puchong for eight weeks. I had a good learning experience in all my clinical postings.

I am forever grateful for all the opportunities and encouragement that have been given to me. A special word of thanks to the Faculty of Health Sciences, especially to my lecturers and the Dean for their guidance and dedication in nurturing my passion and love for uplifting the community’s wellbeing. A breakthrough to improve my soft skills resulted in a change in my personality as well by the help of my mentors as well as lecturers. I have become more extroverted, stable, agreeable, even more confident, and braver in every step of life I intend to take.

I would also like to thank my friends and classmates for making my Diploma in Physiotherapy study journey a fun and unforgettable one. Last but not least, I am very thankful to my family for supporting me financially, physically, and emotionally which made it possible for me to be where I am today.  I gained a wonderful experience studying at MAHSA University and this journey of mine prompted me to continue my Degree in MAHSA university.
