MAHSA International Dentistry Conference 2021 (Mi-DENT2021)

The Faculty of Dentistry successful completed the MAHSA International Dentistry Conference 2021 (Mi-DENT2021) organised in collaboration with MAHSA Academics Solutions (MACS) and held on the 24th and 25th of September, 2021. The opening ceremony of the conference was addressed among others by YBhg Dato' Mohd Hafiz Bin Yusof (Director of IPTS, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia), YBhg Datuk Dr. Roziah Binti Omar (President of UNIKL, and Member of MAHSA University's Board of Governors), and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ikram Shah Bin Ismail (Vice-Chancellor, MAHSA University). 


The conference included three prestigious international Dental Education symposia respectively on “Clinical-based Education in Restorative Dentistry - the National Perspectives”, “Barriers in Clinical-based Education in Oral Medicine during the Pandemic”, and “Community and Preventive Dental Education Strategies in the New Norm”. The keynote speech was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Denise Sweeney from the School of Education, University of Nottingham, UK.

The symposia were addressed by many prolific academicians and scholars from different countries including Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abu Hassan, FASc from UiTM, Malaysia, Prof. Dr. SF Chuang from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, Prof. Dr. Rahmi Amtha from Trisakti University, Indonesia, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rama Krsna Rajandram from UKM, Malaysia, Prof. Dr. Abdul Rashid Hj. Ismail from Manipal University College Malaysia, and Prof. Dr. Zamros Yuzadi Bin Mohd Yusof from the University of Malaya. 

With a total of 120 participants, the conference followed through with its second-day symposium titled “Inter-professional interaction in Health Profession” and was attended throughout the day by scholars, academicians and researchers from various countries before finally bringing Mi-DENT 2021 to its finale. The second day plenary speeches were delivered by Prof. Dr. Yi-Hsin Connie Yang from National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan, Prof. Dr. Reena Rachel John from Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation, India, and Dr. Kathiravan Purmal (Consultant, Columbia Asia Hospital) from Malaysia, while the keynote address was offered by Prof. Dr. Narsimhan Bharadwaj from Saveetha Dental College & Hospital, Chennai, India. 


The symposium covered two topics presented respectively by Assoc. Prof. Datin Dr. Cynthia from QUEST International University, Malaysia and our very own Prof. Dr. Rusli Bin Nordin from the Faculty of Medicine, Bioscience and Nursing, MAHSA University. And finally, a big congratulations goes out to the winners of the conference in their various categories.

Having met its objective of bringing dental practitioners, educators, researchers, and other groups related to the field of dentistry to share their experiences within the scope of innovation and technological advances in clinical-based education, challenges in dental practices in the new norm, and research options during the pandemic, MiDENT 2021 was indeed a success and the Faculty wishes to thank its participants for making this conference a memorable one.

Shattering Stereotypes: First Malaysian Indigenous Dentist

The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) recently extended their congratulations to Dr Tan Bee Hui, who became the first indigenous person to earn the title of Dentist. JAKOA's message was shared on their TikTok page (@jakoamalaysia) based on a post made by the Malaysia Orang Asli Students' Association (PMOA) on their Facebook page. Tan Bee Hui A/P Tan Boon Huat is MAHSA University Dental Faculty Alumni who successfully completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery earlier this year.
