5 Reasons to Embark on a Diploma

The job market is beginning to see a shift once again in what it expects from its graduates. There was a time when the general public looked at Vocational Training with disinterest, assuming since it was not a degree it is therefore not professional enough to secure a job and is a waste of time and money in college. This however is taking a hundred and eighty degree turn in the current decade. To state a fact, this was never the case in the business industries actually to dismiss a diploma qualification. Even back in the early turn of the millennium and at the rise of the fourth industrial revolution, the assumption that diploma graduates were not employable as compared to a degree graduate remained mostly amongst those not from the industry. So, what exactly disrupted the value of a Diploma or rather who created this assumption?

Well, may be instead of asking what or who disrupted it, let us focus on the reasons why Diplomas are better than Degrees and why school leaver should consider doing a Diploma as their first tertiary education qualification.

Value for Skills More than Theory
Vocational skills are no longer at the bottom of the list. When it comes to a person’s employability, skills obtained through a Diploma outweigh theoretical knowledge learned from expensive Degrees. A recent study by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation demonstrates that employers are gearing up for a world of work where workplace skills are more valued than a degree from a traditional Higher Education Institution. Diplomas provide career-orientated skills that can increase your chances of securing a job. Employers value people who can walk into a new job and be ready to go right into the business’ needs.

A Quicker Route into the Job Market
Due to the study duration of a diploma course, which on average requires a minimum of 24 months of study time to complete, diploma graduates are able to step into the working world sooner than a degree holder. With weekend class options and online learning options, this study mode become even more flexible for its learner.

To add to these plus points, Diplomas provide practical, usable, and most importantly, employable skills that gears its graduate with a job-ready qualification. Why do employers prefer this? Well, it is because they would not have to invest as much resources for upskilling their employees. In a recent global research conducted by Gartner, 70% of employees feel that they haven’t mastered the skills needed to do their jobs and companies worldwide invest close to USD350 billion in training, hence hiring new staff with employable skills save employers time and money.

The Potential to Earn a Higher Salary
According to a research data collected by Georgetown University’s Centre on Education, some countries offer a higher salary to diploma graduates of specialised fields. The diplomas that fall in this category are Computer and Information Technology, Engineering, and Medical or Health Science Diplomas, and once again because of its highly skill-based learning and training while in college, giving its graduates an added advantage in the job market.

Diplomas are More Affordable
Diplomas generally cost a fourth of a degree within its own field making them more affordable. And with its affordable price, semester payments become more do-able for many without having to tie down with a loan. In many circumstances, diploma holders also take this as an advantage to master more than one set of skill, allowing them to improve their chances at progressing faster up the career ladder.

Pathway to a Degree
Since Degrees are more theoretical, online degrees have been able to deliver the same knowledge as a conventional degree. Hence, the practical aspects learnt in a Diplomas permits the understanding and application of what is to be learnt in a degree. Therefore, diploma holders can opt to either study their degree online or enrolling for a full-time undergraduate programme, which every is more convenient to them. However, since securing a job was basically the main reason for graduating with a diploma, online degrees allow for the flexibility of learning while being a full-time employee – giving better options for conquering both worlds: education and employment.
