To Recycle or Not to Recycle - Is that Even a Question?

I hope you're prepared to recycle because November 15 is National Recycling Day, and we're making certain that nothing goes to waste. According to National Geographic, Americans generate sixty-four tonnes of rubbish in their lifetimes. That equates to 246 million tonnes of garbage per year. The goal of National Recycling Day is to encourage Americans to buy recycled items and recycle more. But should this day be designated just to one nation? It is after all the responsibility of every earthling to play their role in conserving and preserving the home we all live in, isn't it?  So, what is recycling, anyways? Recycling is the collection and processing of items that would otherwise be discarded as waste in order to create new products. Did you know that we can recycle metal, plastic, glass, paper, water, and even human waste? Recycling minimises the quantity of garbage sent to landfills and incinerators and aids in the conservation of natural resources such as timber, wate...

Virtual learning, to a large extent, has allowed great flexibility and comfort, as well as increased inclusivity and accessibility. Online teaching is an effective solution by connecting people at different locations through interactive lectures and tutorials. Dentists can utilise this technology to share their knowledge and expertise with the world while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. Online Proctored Synchronous Phase I and Phase II Final Examination - First of Its Kind!

I n 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary for us to conduct 100%-proctored online exams. It was a great challenge, but we as a small team in MAHSA’s School of Medicine took it up and made it a success. Our historic first-ever online proctored (pro-part B exam) for the Year 2 MBBS final professional examination was held on 29th and 30th August 2020 and involved live video streaming of the students taking the exams with real time screen sharing with the allotted invigilators, making sure they were proctored mirroring traditional face to face invigilation, which was also appreciated by our external examiners.  The exams included online proctoring of theory, OSPE and Digital OSCE. We also take pride in the fact that we are one among the very few medical schools who have obtained the MMC approval for the conduct this mode of exam under these challenging conditions. Our effort included developing tools to support online exams which was ably supported by the IT and LMS team...

3D Printing Hands-On Workshop

As the world moves forward to IR4.0, additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, plays a very important role because this technology makes prototyping possible with less effort compared to traditional methods. For those new to the technology, 3D printing can be a tool to turn their creativity into reality. On 26 April 2021, a short programme called 3D Printing Hands-On Workshop was conducted with the Year 8 and Year 7 students from MAHSA International School (MISKL). The programme was led by Mr Sheih Muhammad Buhari and Mr Mukram Idris from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment of MAHSA University. The students were taught to design a 3D object using Sketch-Up before the 3D printing demonstration. First, the students were shown how to design a simple key and then to modify it i...

Community Project: A Pint Saves Three

Fourteen students from the Biomedical programme (Batch 9 )  organised a blood donation campaign in collaboration with the National Blood Centre (Pusat Darah Negara) on the 27th of October 2021 (Wednesday) from 10 am to 4 pm .  This blood donation drive was aimed to help the National Blood Centre to increase their storage of blood units, which was low due to the current Covid-19 pandemic and as an initiative of giving back to community. It was opened to all the MAHSA University students and staff and the residents of Bandar Saujana Putra.  An Instagram account  @hero.med9   was created to promote the importance of a blood donation campaign and to encourage people to donate blood. The team targeted to collect 70 blood bags. The response was overwhelming as they received 88 donors, with 17 being turned down due to high blood pressure and low haemoglobin levels, unfortunately.  By the end of the day, 71 donor units were collected. The event wa...

The Future of Medical Education

Since time immemorial, the medical profession, first in medieval times the apothecaries and then in modern times the doctors, the anesthesiologists, the pharmacists, the radiologists and all the other countless medical experts in their fields, have been sought after by everyone and even hailed as heroes. Superheroes, even, when life is gratefully saved and death is thankfully postponed. The advent of the global COVID-19 pandemic has brought home the absolute necessity of the medical profession. Doctors, in particular, are known to be the unsung heroes of the world. But what lies on the horizon for the education of our medical practitioners, especially now in the wake of a global pandemic that has brought the world to its knees?
