Time Management for Student Success

Time management is a cluster of behavioral skills that are important in the organization of study and course load. Time management can also be defined as a form of self-management with a clear emphasis of time in understanding what activities to conduct, how to conduct efficiently and what should be done at the right time.

Students these days often complain that they do not have enough time to complete all the tasks given to them. A university environment's flexibility and freedom also can derail students who are not able to manage their time properly. According to Shazia, (2015) time management is significantly correlated to student's academic performance. Finally, there truly is a significant and positive relation between planning, time management and academic performance of the student.

To improve the academic achievement, students need to manage their learning tasks and focus on achieving learning objective within time designated time frames. This requires time management techniques and skills. Suitable time management skills have been identified as influencing stress and the key to higher performance, lower stress, and anxiety in higher education.

It has been reported that first year students frequently get confused with university life because there are no mentors monitoring them, ensuring that they all attend classes, complete assignments, sit and pass examination for each semester and finally, to graduate on time. In university, students are often expected to juggle their studies with their first experience of living out on their own while other have the added complexity of having to deal with work-life balance if they hold an employment. Thus, without proper time management, students find the initial phase on university life overwhelming and many perform poorly, are highly stressed or even drop-out

With this in mind, MAHSA University decided to offer Time Management as a common module subject at our university. This subject is compulsory for all students and it teaches students to organize and plan their division of time for specific activities both academic and non-academic. This subject is offered for the purpose of students to learn skills and techniques to effectively manage their time and encourage them to make proper plans which can then help them avoid higher stress levels and poor academic results. We have receive encouraging feedback from the students who have taken this course.

In conclusion, students need to properly manage their time to achieve greater outcomes in academic performance as well as their other life goals and MAHSA University understand this and integrated this component in all our programmes. It is our commitment to provide the best possible education and skills for all MAHSA students to succeed .
