Exciting news from the School of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Health Sciences, MAHSA University! We are proud to announce the successful publication of a research paper by our academic staff, Mr. Narayanan Muthukumaran in collaboration with Dr. V. Rajalakshmi, Ms. Kirthika, Mohan Kumar K. Balathandayutham and E. Kavitha from Faculty of Physiotherapy, Dr. M.G.R Educational & Research Institute University. Their research paper is entitled “Prevalence of Risk Indicators of Heart Diseases Among Professional Male Bus Drivers has been published in the International Journal of Life Science and Pharma Research.

The International Journal of Life Science and Pharma Research, is a Professional Journal of Life Science and Pharma Research and is indexed in Embase (Elsevier), PubMed, Web of Science Index, Copernicus International (ICI), International Scientific Indexing (ISI) with a Scientific Journal Impact factor (SJIF) of 8.547 and IPI index value of 2.74 and a SCImago Journal Rank (SJR 2019) of 0.126.

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of heart disease risk indicators among male professional bus drivers. Due to an irregular diet, lifestyle, and shift work, the risk of heart disease is now more common among male professional bus drivers. The observational study included 100 male professional drivers selected by convenience sampling. Face to face questioning strategies were administered to obtain information about their lifestyle conditions and shift of work.

Anthropometric measurements such as body mass index, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose level were measured. The risk score for the indicators of cardiovascular diseases is estimated using a gender specific Framingham risk score. Data analysis shows nearly 55 % of subjects were in the low-risk category, 35% were in the intermediate -risk category, and 10% were in the high -risk category of developing a cardiovascular disease over a 10 years period.

The study concluded that bus drivers are at intermediate and high risk of developing CVD, which has now become the leading cause of mortality in India. The risk of heart disease is higher among male professional bus drivers who are exposed to several possible risk indicators of cardiovascular diseases. Low physical activity was associated with a higher risk of CVD among male professional bus drivers.

In addition to this research paper, Mr. Narayanan Muthukumaran has previously published a paper titled "Effects of Dual Task Training versus PNF Pattern on Balance and Cognition in Geriatric Population" in the International Journal of Life Science and Pharma Research in July 2022 He is currently a lecturer in the School of Physiotherapy, MAHSA University.
