The simplest way
to make a good first impression is to show an appropriate facial expression. One
of the most appealing traits a person may have is a genuine smile. It has the
ability to really light up a room by establishing positivity and making
individuals in our presence feel welcomed. While it is crucial to smile, be
careful not to show a cheesy, inauthentic grin. A broad smile may indicate we
are trying to hide our nervousness, or worse, we may look arrogant. A simple
smile may go a long way.
Body language speaks louder than words, and research shows that it accounts for more than 90% of a person's first impression. As a result, being aware of it is essential. Maintaining a proper posture and standing tall will make us appear more self-assured, confident and energetic. It's also crucial to appear approachable, so don't wrap your arms stiffly around your body. Instead, try to be comfortable, or at least, pretend to be.
People always say
“don’t judge a book by its cover” but in reality, we do this all the time,
intentionally or unintentionally. Taking care of our physical appearance and
dressing appropriately helps to create a positive first impression. Even simple
modifications according to the situation, might increase our chances of
establishing a favourable impression. These include matching the formality of
our attire to the event, wearing colours and patterns that flatter us, and
selecting suitable accessories. Get a personal grooming consultancy at least
once to know what works best for our overall appearance.
Now that we have taken care of the non-verbal cues, it is time for us to work on the personal introduction and greetings. Our introduction should describe who we are in an intriguing and captivating way that tempts people to continue interacting with us. We also want to be remembered in a good way. Limit to only sharing a short and simple introduction and stay humble along the conversation. We definitely don’t want to go around looking like a bragger. Show genuine interest when approaching people and make sure to remember their names.
We will most likely meet a new person almost everyday, whether at work, on campus, or at any other occasion. Walk through all these tips leave people with a great first impression that will last!
