Spike LEGO Competition and Workshop

On the 14th of April 2023, a group of talented students from MAHSA's Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology showcased their ingenuity and coding skills at the Spike LEGO competition and workshop organized by Universiti Tenaga Nasional, The Energy University. This event aimed to introduce students to LEGO Robotic Education, provide hands-on workshops, and engage them in a friendly mini competition.

Objective-driven Event:
The Spike LEGO competition and workshop organized by Universiti Tenaga Nasional had a clear set of objectives. Firstly, it aimed to familiarize participants with LEGO Robotic Education, offering them a hands-on experience in coding and programming robots. Secondly, the event incorporated a workshop where students could enhance their coding skills and knowledge using LEGO Spike software. Lastly, a mini competition was held, allowing students to showcase their newly acquired coding abilities in a friendly and competitive environment.

Participation and Schedule:
Six enthusiastic students from the IET club at MAHSA University eagerly participated in the event. The competition and workshop took place from 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm, providing ample time for the students to engage with the LEGO Spike platform and explore its coding capabilities.

Hands-on Learning with LEGO Spike:
During the workshop, the students were introduced to coding using the LEGO Spike software. They learned how to program simple robots to follow lines and detect objects using ultrasonic sensors. The LEGO Education SPIKE App, which utilizes Scratch blocks, provided a user-friendly and familiar interface for the students. The block-based coding approach enabled easier debugging and systematic problem-solving, empowering students to overcome challenges. The introduction of Python coding using SPIKE Prime further enriched the students' STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning experience.

A Successful Learning Experience:
Through the Spike LEGO competition and workshop, MAHSA University students gained valuable insights into controlling and coding basic robots. The event not only enhanced their technical skills but also fostered their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. The collaboration with Universiti Tenaga Nasional's IET on campus showcased the importance of industry-academic partnerships in providing students with enriching learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting.
