Oral Cancer - Recent Advancement in Oral Cancer Management & Improving Patient Centeredness and Communication in Oral Cancer Management in Malaysia (An Overview)

Oral Cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide, with a high prevalence in south Asia affecting young people as well as older ones. Tobacco and alcohol consumption remain the most dominant etiologic factors. Surgical options remain the well-established mode of initial definitive treatment for the majority of oral cancers. But the challenge is the reconstruction of the defect and rehabilitation of the patients as a whole. Various factors such as primary site, size, proximity to adjacent vital bones and depth of infiltration have an influence on surgical approach. The main objective of this lecture is to highlight the recent advances in the surgical management of oral cancer. More often than not, the management of oral cancer patients is primarily focused on clinical aspects and is heavily based on the clinicians’ perspectives. A paradigm shift is urgently needed for clinicians to improve the level of patient-centered care (PCC) and doctor-patient communication in ensuring

It's Time to be a Superhero in Dental Health

To be a dentist or not to be a dentist? It's rather easy to assume that since we meet our dentist only once in six months, and that we are able to find a dental clinic close by to where we live, especially those who live in the city,  be it private or public, that we have more than enough Dentist and that doing a Dental Degree would mean hunting for a job after graduation. But factually this is incorrect and is certainly not the case within Malaysia itself. In a recent article published in The STAR entitled “Do We Have Enough Dentists” by University Malaya’s Professor Dr Rahimah Abdul Kadir, a registered Dental Public Health Specialist and Adjunct Professor, it is said that there is a grave shortage of dentists in the country. For our population of an estimated 32.7 million, there are only about 11,000 dentists currently. This means there is one dentist to serve five thousand people in West Malaysia and one dentist to serve eleven thousand people in Sabah and Sarawak. The lack

Intelligent System for Power Disturbance Monitoring in Power Quality

Power-disturbance monitoring is one of the important aspects of dealing with power quality issues in electrical systems. The aim of conducting the monitoring process is to identify the real cause of the power quality (PQ) problem. One of the vital steps during the monitoring process is classifying the various types of power disturbance. This classification process is very important to propose the correct mitigation technique. In order to produce a reliable classification technique, it is important to deploy the devices which can accommodate the software and hardware. The software is in need for algorithm development such as signal processing, Artificial Intelligent (AI), and statistical analysis. For the hardware, the device’s ability to acquire the electrical parameter within the electrical system operation is very important. The data acquisition based on the voltage and current is essential too for the classification algorithm of the software. This webinar focusses on how the power

In photography, juxtaposition is an compelling skill which basically encompasses the placement of two or more items side by side, creating an fascinating illusion that is contrast in colors, forms, lines, and other factors. Due to its level of complexity and intriguing nature, the Centre for Pre-University Studies (CPUS) decided t

THE ART OF GOOD LEADERSHIP

It has been said that leaders are born, not made. But we beg to disagree because we believe that the desirable traits of a good leader can be learned. And as such, good leaders can be trained, and it is never too early nor too late to get started.  Leadership Attributes  What makes a good leader? There are many attributes that good leaders have, or should have, rather. 1. Vision Vision in this context is the leader’s ability to conceptualise and visualise the goals that she or he desires for the entire team, be they measurable or immeasurable goals. The leader might envision the kinds of personal growth for each individual member of the team, as well as for the team in its entirety. These measurable and immeasurable goals will differ depending on the nature of the organisation and/or team. 2. Integrity Integrity is an integral part of any relationship, and as a leader, it is an indispensable trait because the entire team’s success or failure relies on the honesty, accountability and tr

Success is counted sweetest by those who ne'er succeed

"Success is counted sweetest by those who ne'er succeed" Emily Dickinson. Since the beginning of my life, I have been studying. In the early years of my childhood, I didn't quite understand what my role was all about. I always wondered why it is that I have to go to school every day because my family said so. When I was growing up I found the answer by myself. When I stepped foot into MAHSA University as a scared kid, unsure of herself. Truth be told, I was not an A-star student in high school or during my foundation course. At the age of 18, I had no idea what I wanted to do, the thought of doing medicine seemed like the right choice, given that most of my family were doctors. But when the day of reckoning came, when my grades were out and I had to decide, my gut feeling said “Engineering! Just go for it!! I think we can make this work, I told myself”. To be honest, I doubted myself and my choice, but what happened next is that I fell in love with the disciplin
