Oral Cancer - Recent Advancement in Oral Cancer Management & Improving Patient Centeredness and Communication in Oral Cancer Management in Malaysia (An Overview)
Oral Cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide, with a high prevalence in south Asia affecting young people as well as older ones. Tobacco and alcohol consumption remain the most dominant etiologic factors. Surgical options remain the well-established mode of initial definitive treatment for the majority of oral cancers. But the challenge is the reconstruction of the defect and rehabilitation of the patients as a whole. Various factors such as primary site, size, proximity to adjacent vital bones and depth of infiltration have an influence on surgical approach. The main objective of this lecture is to highlight the recent advances in the surgical management of oral cancer. More often than not, the management of oral cancer patients is primarily focused on clinical aspects and is heavily based on the clinicians’ perspectives.
