Physiotherapy students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing and Education (FOHSNE), MAHSA University were privileged to attend a hands-on workshop by Mr. Liam Harkness a leading Sport therapist from UK with more than 25 years’ experience treating clients with all kinds of long-term health issues and chronic pain. Liam studied and worked with Aaron Mattes, the founder of Active Isolated Stretching (AIS). Under Aaron's tutelage, Liam developed his approach to sports performance and rehabilitation by learning to optimize force distribution during movement.
Liam conducted
this 3-hour for MAHSA students with the help of his assistant Ms. Jasmine Pang who
coincidentally is a Physiotherapy alumna
of MAHSA University.
Some of the things students learn during the workshop were how to assess upper body posture and the role posture plays in Janda's upper crossed syndrome, the laws of movement that govern load and force distribution, active assisted stretches to open tight fascia and soft tissue, strength and activation exercises to build postural stability and improve posture. The trainerson also conducted a mini quiz and gave prizes to the winners at the end of session.
Active Isolated
Stretching (AIS) protocols have been used by top physios and physical
therapists for more than 40 years and continue to be an effective tool for both
pain management and performance
It was an
extremely beneficial workshop which our students thoroughly enjoyed. We want to
thank Mr. Liam and Ms. Jasmine for sharing their knowledge on Active Isolated
Stretching (AIS) with our students
