Researcher Spotlight: Associate Professor Dr. Pallav Sengupta



Dr. Pallav Sengupta (BSc (Hons, Physiology), MSc (Physiology), PhD (Reproductive Endocrinology), Research Internship (Andrology) (Cleveland Clinic, USA) is the Associate Professor in Physiology and Head of Services (Research) in the Faculty of Medicine, Biosciences and Nursing, MAHSA University, Malaysia. Dr Sengupta is a physiologist and a prolific researcher with over one hundred and sixty (160) research publications and an H-index of 33. He has authored several books and book chapters with top-notch publishers. His main research interests are reproductive endocrinology, reproductive medicine, and infertility. 

MAHSA University is proud to announce that Dr Sengupta has been ranked among the top 2% of scientists in the world by Stanford University, USA, for two years in a row in 2020 and 2021. Dr Sengupta has also earned great recognition in Malaysia, and is ranked 2nd among the infertility research experts in Malaysia, as well as in the sub-specialty of male infertility, consecutively in 2020 and 2021, by Expertscape. 

Associate Professor Dr Pallav Sengupta’s journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Physiology (Honours) and a Master of Science (MSc) in Physiology with a specialisation in Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology where he secured 3rd rank in the University of Calcutta, India. His research steps started with the MSc Research Project in Endocrinology where he worked on the anti-thyroidal effects of plant food, which included estimation of thiocyanate, cyanogenic glucoside content of different food-stuffs that are commonly consumed in Kolkata, India, and in vitro assay of the alterations in thyroidal enzyme activities. His credentials in the Masters made him procure the Fellowship of Excellence from the University Grant Commission (UGC) to obtain an earned PhD in Physiology with a specialisation in Reproductive Endocrinology from the University of Calcutta. For his PhD dissertation, Dr Sengupta investigated the effects of two prime hard-water salts on the morphological and functional aspects of male gonadal and adrenocortical system in adult Wistar rat models. His research output from his doctoral project won the Young Scientist Award, also known as the ‘Professor PB Sen Memorial Research Award’ by the Physiological Society of India (PSI), in 2012. Later, Dr Sengupta also pursued a research internship in andrology from the American Center for Reproductive Medicine (ACRM), Cleveland Clinic, USA, that has added a great deal to his expertise.

Dr Sengupta is currently working with several research grants, including the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) from the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) of Malaysia, and several with MAHSA University on reproductive immunology, metabolic hormones and infertility.

MAHSA University highly values and recognises the research contributions of AP Dr Pallav Sengupta and awarded him with the ‘Highest Publication Award’ in 2019 and 2021. Dr Sengupta has extensive research collaborations worldwide, which is one of the most essential aspects to succeed in this modern era of research. He is an International Research Mentor and Collaborator of the American Centre for Reproductive Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, USA. He is a Visiting Scientist at the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER), Chennai, India. He has active collaborations with the University of Byalistovk (Poland), Yeni Yüzyil Ãœniversitesi (Turkey) and the University of Nigeria, as well as with some eminent universities in India and Malaysia. Also, his research collaborations with a large number of professionals from various countries, races, cultures and languages from all over the world add greatly to various aspects of his professional skills. 

Associate Professor Dr Pallav Sengupta is of the opinion that practising good research in the University allows for a broader educational experience for students and they are able to explore new thought processes, applying them for novel concepts or innovations for the betterment of society, and enables them to understand the value of research for their own career development as well.
